Obama's slick-shooter answer on gun ban Posted April 17, 2008 6:26 AM By Rick Pearson PHILADELPHIA—During last night’s Democratic presidential debate, Sen. Barack Obama gave a nuanced response as to whether he believed a District of Columbia law banning handguns, currently being considered by the U.S. Supreme Court, is consistent with the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms. “Well Charlie, I confess, I obviously haven’t listened to the briefs and looked at all the evidence,” the Illinois se

Obama, Clinton, flag pins, patriots Posted April 17, 2008 7:00 AM by Mark Silva Neither Sen. Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama was wearing a flag lapel pin during last night’s nationally televised debate of the Democratic candidates for president. But Obama, who has been criticized in the past for not wearing one – and who did wear one that a veteran handed him at a town-hall campaign event in Pennsylvania the other day – was the one facing the question in the two-hour debate in Phila

Random: tag, I’m it

Daniel Smyth has tagged me — because I tag blog entries “Random.” The game is to write down six random things about myself, then tag six others. I’ll play. 1. My first editor (on the Dos Pueblos High School newspaper) was Lisa Stark, now ABC News Washington correspondent. 2. My first fiction editors were Jo and Thomas Perry, who published my short story “Boomer Sooner” in the UC Santa Barbara literary magazine, Spectrum (way before they wrote for Star Trek: The Next Generation, or Thomas won

Brave New Exhibitionism

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 04:30:28 PDT
Yale Daily News: Art major Aliza Shvarts '08 wants to make a statement. Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process. The goal in creating the art ex

Al Qaeda Shattered, Scrambles to Kill More and More

More good news from Iraq. Just look at all the AQI leaders that have been rounded up. What? You didn't notice? Can't imagine why... Multinational Force-Iraq provides a letter from the front lines intended for HQ, but instead ended up in our hands when the author was killed. Nice division of labor: assassins, snipers, and martyrs. Now project that onto the government of the Caliphate-to-be, and you get (fill in your favorite totalitarian regime).

In a report, the government said that the number of Filipinos grew nearly 16 percent to 88.57 million as of August 2007 from 76.50 million in May 2000. By 2009, with a projected population of 92.22 million, the Philippines will consume 9.75 million metric tons of rice, higher than the ex

Time Frames Matter

The hubby and I are looking at two stocks. Both stocks have sold off recently (due to the subprime/Bear Stearns messes). One stock has been hit more heavily than the other. There is a possibility there may be more bad news for this stock. This is partially factored into today's price but there would still be a drop upon the announcement. I expect both stocks to eventually recover to their historic p/e's. So all other things being equal, which one should we buy? It depends. If we needed the cash
