Thoughts on DataPortability

Sun, 11 May 2008 20:06:26 PDT
Introduction Over the last several days I’ve started and abandoned four drafts of this post. Usually it doesn’t take me this long to write out my thoughts, or to go through so many different approaches, but I wanted to express myself as clearly as I could given the amount and overlapping texture of what I wanted to say. I ended up gutting a lot, and tried to focus on some basics, making as few assumptions about the reader (you) as possible. The reality is that I’m eyeballs-deep in this stuff,

According to Google Trends , but also according to Distrowatch, our own statistics here at OSNews and overall sense of the industry during 2006, Ubuntu has a big leap in mind share ahead of its competition (please note that we don't dare to say "market share", although we are pretty confident that it's the most used Linux desktop out there today).

The Machine Is Us

Sun, 11 May 2008 20:24:44 PDT
We've come a long way from HAL, the machine in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey that rebels at the plan to disconnect him. The fear of machines in these films is rooted in the fear of them as a separated and uncontrollable force. They are not us. But now it seems that we are clearly transitioning into a new period in which machine and human mesh. The machine is us now. We mod and mash-up the real and the virtual. The challenge going forward is to balance the relationship. To understand and

EarthTalk: Healthy fast food? Sunblock?

Sun, 11 May 2008 21:00:27 PDT
Dear EarthTalk: I really want to eat healthy and organic but am constantly traveling and on the go. How can I eat fast food without having to always end up at McDonalds and Burger King? – Dylan Baker, Seattle, Washington The latest trend in fast food is healthy and organic, and luckily for conscious consumers, several chains offering just such fare are taking root in different parts of the U.S. One of the leaders of this small but scrappy pack of fast food upstarts is O’Naturals. The small c

The “War” Between Inflation and Deflation Has Produced Plenty of Noise and Casualties

Sun, 11 May 2008 21:00:59 PDT
The markets didn’t reveal anything very telling yesterday. The Dow rose 52 points. The dollar held steady. Oil remained near its all time record of $123. And gold went up $10. So far, things have worked out more or less as we expected. The “war” between inflation and deflation has produced plenty of noise and casualties...but no decisive victory. We guessed that the Fed would be far more interested in fighting a deflationary recession than in fighting an inflationary boom. America’s central b

BlackBerry Partners Fund a coup for JLA and RBC

Sun, 11 May 2008 21:01:47 PDT
In a few hours, the BlackBerry Partners Fund will be launched. With all of the fanfare will come a breath of life into the lungs of the Canadian venture capital industry. Chatter regarding the new fund has been sloshing around for the past couple of weeks (none of it out of JLA’s team), but we wanted to let our Wellington Financial advisory council member, John Albright, announce his own news on his own timeline. Unfortunately, an embargoed news item provided to VentureBeat was released early

Sen. McCain the Supreme Court, and the Future Constitutionality of McCain-Feingold

Sun, 11 May 2008 21:07:48 PDT
David Nather, writing for CQ Weekly, observes: "When he promised last week that as president he'd nominate only strict constructionists to the Supreme Court, there was one subject John McCain didn't mention in his review of the court's trends: the campaign finance overhaul he pushed through Congress six years ago. That's probably just as well, because if the Arizona senator has the opportunity to pick people like Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.-- he mentioned

LSD is the Latest Trend in Lebanon

Sun, 11 May 2008 21:36:11 PDT
Acid wasn't really on anyone's radar in Beirut until quite recently. People in the scene say that it was sometime around the early Fall of 2007 that it began to be more accessible, after a select group of Beirut dealers began offering LSD on a regular basis.

Affiliate Programs - More Important Information That Could Help You Along The Way

Sun, 11 May 2008 21:38:56 PDT
Many newbies come into affiliate marketing and affiliate programs of all types can start out being very green and think they can make money fast and easy with only doing the basics and not actually committing themselves to a long term business model or plan. I believe the best way to take advantage within affiliate marketing is to create a blog farm that will provide significant traffic, that doesn’t mean spam blogs but blogs that are properly created and marketed to your target audience. 2D barcodes and ViPR

Sun, 11 May 2008 21:43:32 PDT
One of the most interesting aspects of mobile devices is their ability to link the physical and the digital world. 2D barcoding has been extremely popular in Japan and Korea for the last few years and is starting at last to penetrate the more mobile challenged regions of the world such as the US. In the US, the uptake on 2D barcodes and other technologies linking the analogue and the digital world has been slower- largely due to lack of agreement among the five major carriers as to which tech

Spread of Nuclear Capability Is Feared

Sun, 11 May 2008 21:45:00 PDT
At least 40 developing countries from the Persian Gulf region to Latin America have recently approached U.N. officials here to signal interest in starting nuclear power programs, a trend that concerned proliferation experts say could provide the building blocks of nuclear arsenals in some of those nations.
